The settlement of Finikia is a hidden gem, peacefully sheltered from the jam of tourists just minutes away in nearby Oia, here is the place to relax and breathe in the beauty and tranquility of authentic Santorini village life. Cave houses and elegant churches dot the network of footpaths tucked below the natural protective cliff wall. Walking these quiet footpaths, one can almost hear whispers of the village’s rich history of bustling naval trade, pirate attacks and old-time wine production. The village remains even today a vibrant neighborhood.
The house is comprised of three suites joined by a generous, sunny courtyard. The house, formerly a historical wine canava, has been transformed by careful renovations into a home with family comfort, fine modern finishes and traditional Cycladic island style.
Cellars of Amelie served as a winery and cellar (or “canava”) at the turn of the century.
The original structure has been sensitively renovated, preserving the layout and other features as creative design elements, relics of the building’s important role in Santorini history. The beautiful organic shape and proportions of the smooth walls, vaulted ceilings and arched openings tell the story of the canava and how it was constructed by carving into the soft pumice stone earth of the village hills.
Another notable feature of the house is its natural ambient interior temperature. The natural insulation of the earthen walls of the space regulated the temperature of the canava year-round, to help preserve the wine stored in barrels. Today, this natural insulation continues to produce an advantage for the house, maintaining a constantly cool interior environment, even on the hottest summer days.
To enter Villa Amelie Cellars, a little wooden gate opens from the footpath into the private enclosed courtyard, surrounded by plaster walls of soothing earth tones with original volcanic stone arches. There are several outdoor areas to enjoy here, surrounded by views of the surrounding village or the distant sea. An arbor with lush climbing vines heavy with fresh grapes provides shade from the bright sunlight. The dining area offers a charming place for enjoying meals al fresco in the twilight or under the stars. Stretch out on a chaise and watch the many brilliant colors of Santorini’s famous sunset unfurl over the sea, as day turns to night, and the twinkling of village lights in the distance come into view. The picturesque settlement of Finikia, with its domed chapels and tiny cave houses, will not cease to delight any time of the day or night.
Altogether, Villa Amelie Cellars can accommodate up to a total of eleven guests in the three suites combined.
Each of the three suites has its own door from the courtyard terrace, a kitchenette and dedicated full bathroom with built-in shower. Each built-in kitchenette includes a small refrigerator, countertop convenience appliances, cookware, china and cutlery.
Suite one is great for a family of up to five guests, with three connected rooms containing a single day bed and two double beds. The bedrooms are connected by archway openings (not doors). You reach the bathroom through the second double bedroom.
Suite two is similar: It can accommodate up to four guests in two connected rooms containing two single day beds and one double bed. You reach the bathroom via the double bedroom.
Suite three can accommodate two guests in a double bed.
The interiors are bright and airy, letting the colors of the island shine through each window frame. Tasteful modern finishes blend with selectively preserved original features. Soft curving plaster walls, vaulted ceilings and archways showcase the house’s traditional Cycladic charm, reminders of its original use as a wine-storage canava during Santorini’s illustrious wine-making past. Hand-pigmented polished cement in a palette of soft neutrals graces the curving walls of the bathroom’s built-in shower and furnishings: a technique and detail unique to Santorini’s cave homes.
